Today we went to Herculean. We took a high speed train to Naples and then a mini train to Ercolana Scavi, the location of the ruins of Herculean. Near Herculean, there is a large excavation site with the remains of houses, streets, etc. These people were very smart so they had things like running water and fast food places. The jars that they kept the fast food in were insulated with early Styrofoam, which was actually pumice. The jars were filled with pumice because pumice came down from Mt. Vesevius in 0079 when it erupted and ash covered Herculean. There weren’t many roofs left on the buildings because many things were crushed and burned when the lava flowed down the mountain and into Herculean.
After we spent a couple hours exploring Herculean, we took a minibus up the winding road to just a half mile below the top of Mt. Vesuvius. We started our hike and it started sleeting; we kept going while passing many tour groups. We finally reached the caldera and started to walk around. It was very misty so we couldn’t see much while walking.
Once we walked the circumference of the caldera, we hiked back down. We took the train back to Rome and crashed.
